Back To Basics

I find it odd that consumers (myself included) are happy when we get a great customer service experience from a waiter, phone rep, cashier etc. We usually end up going back to that company to do business. The reason I find it odd is because companies are supposed to be giving great customer service. It seems that bad customer service is the norm these days. We have become complacent with mediocre or bad customer service and joyous about what we are supposed to have. But that really isn’t what this post is about.

This post is about the companies that do give great customer service and the thing they have in common. All of these companies do “the basics” correctly. They greet you and smile when you come in the door. They understand that your time is important and that you have a choice of where to spend your money. They make you comfortable at all costs. They get it. They know that they will make money if you are happy. They are doing the right things right, not just doing things right. They take care of the customer and everything else takes care of itself.

This also applies to “internet marketing gurus”, “bloggers”, and most people trying to make money online. They put up advertisements of products they have never tried. They promote companies they have never purchased from. They basically lie to consumers to make a buck. It works for a while but the well eventually dries up when consumers realize that they have been duped. These online money makers aren’t taking care of the thing most basic to business……the customer!

I think this concept also applies to each one of our personal lives. There is so much going on in the world today; it is easy to spend time on things that just don’t matter. I’ll put myself out there…..I own dozens of domain names, I have an login for every social website possible, and I try and manage dozens of web sites. I try and chase the dollar by doing a lot of things. But I have realized that I need to do the right things right. To do this, I need to get back to basics and everything else will take care of itself.

The next time you go to a place of business and get great customer service, take notice of how they made it a great experience. I would bet that they don’t do anything crazy or over the top. It will probably be simple and, well, basic.

Get back to basics in your personal life. Not only will you be happy, but life will be less stressful
